This past Saturday was Jennifer Lawrence’s birthday, and to celebrate the occasion the internet, in its infinite wisdom, dug up a clip from a failed 2007 pilot which featured Lawrence for all of 10 seconds. The show was to be called Not Another High School Show, a TV show version of the parody film Not Another Teen Movie (2001). Comedy Central commissioned the pilot from that film’s producer, Mike Bender, who then proceeded to mostly cobble together a pilot mocking the conventions of TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) and Dawson’s Creek (1998-2003) which had long since left the air. The actual centerpiece of the footage is a pre-Community Allison Brie as a stand-in for Sarah Michelle Gellar from season 1 Buffy.
As summarized by US Magazine, “Brie plays Muffy Rabinowitz, a new student at La Playa Beach Creek Hills High, who happens to be a vampire slayer. Muffy is seen having a raunchy conversation with her advisor before she is tasked with taking down the creature of ‘Wolfis Teenagius.’ Muffy begins her mission, holding a stake as she eyes the school’s janitor as a potential threat. Amongst a bevy of fictional high school tropes, Muffy goes after the janitor, repeatedly attacking him.”
Brie is not working with the best material (she’s called Muffy mostly because vagina jokes are funny), but she is really giving it her all, especially as she murders H. John Benjamin (Archer!!!) as the janitor in the background as other, less-famous actors give it their best in the foreground.
I actually really like Not Another Teen Movie, and I’d probably watch an episode or two of Not Another High School Show. But it would probably wear thin pretty quickly, and that, kids, is how Comedy Central decided against picking up the pilot.
