UPDATED: Want to See Oliver Almost Kiss Felicity? Then Check Out This New Arrow: Season 3 Promo

UPDATED 9/4/14 – There’s now a newer, longer season 3 promo which…eh, it’s mostly the same stuff just more of it along with a spoiler or two and Oliver wielding a gun.  Jump to the bottom to see it.

Heads up, .gif makers of the internet: the CW has just given us our first tease of Oliver’s first (almost) kiss with Felicity on Arrow.  It comes in this new 20-second teaser for season 3, which in addition to the Oliver/Felicity teasing also gives us a glimpse of Thea training with Malcolm, another look at Peter Stormare’s new version of Count Vertigo, and some standard butt-kickin’ action.  Plus, it opens with what I’m relatively certain is Oliver Queen’s new catchphrase, “There are still a few things that you don’t know about me.”

Somewhere Allison Mack is looking on, fuming that Felicity may eventually get to go with Oliver to places Smallville never let Chloe go with Clark.  But what’s this now?  Oliver and Felicity are going to be a couple this season?  Wha-wha-what!

Eh, kind of.  Oliver professed his love for Felicity in the season 2 finale, but it turned out to be a ruse to fool the season’s big bad.  Now, in the season 3 premiere the two will go out on a date and have a frank discussion about their feelings for each other.  It won’t go well, and Brandon Routh with quickly show up as Ray Palmer, who comic book fans know as the sub-atomic superhero The Atom but Oliver and Felicity will simply know as that guy trying to buy Queen Consolidated.  There will be some definite sparkage between Ray and Felicity, and Oliver probably won’t like it.

You know, standard TV love triangle stuff.

Or so we think.  If this show had always gone the routes we expected Oliver would be gearing up to finally commit to Laurel right about now.  So, who knows how this thing will play out.  Oliver usually has some woman in his life whose fate represents the cost of his heroic burden.  This season, it may be Felicity’s turn.

Here’s the longer season 3 trailer from Comic-Con:

I should point out that obviously not everyone wants Oliver and Felicity together, and, in fact, the thought of watching them kiss feels like watching a brother and sister get way too incestuous.  Let’s see if they have Oliver and Felicity ultimately feel the same way.  They probably won’t, but we’ll get a better idea when season 3 of Arrow  drops on Oct. 8th.

  1. I’m definitely a fan of Olicity. They are adorable. Despite being a shipper, I am holding some of my excitement to see how they handle the relationship. If they know how to keep the relationship interesting and challenging without entering cliche territory, I’m all for it. If not, I’d rather them not tackle it.

      Completely agreed.

  2. To quote Patrick Tyson (Richard Crenna) from the 1995 movie Sabrina “I have a sister. We don’t dance like that.”

Stephen Amell said that people on his FB page complained that Oliver had slept with every age-appropriate woman on the show that he wasn’t related to so he took this to the EPs and said ‘not such a good thing’. This season, as Amell said, there is one woman in Oliver’s life and it’s Felicity. So given how many shows have hurt themselves by keeping the lead couple apart till hardly anyone cares any more about either of them, if this show wants to go the unexpected route, they could put Oliver and Felicity together and keep them together, eschewing soap opera in favor of emphasizing the major theme of the show, crime fighting.

Oliver may have been getting ready to commit to Laurel this season if Oliver/Laurel had been better received. But for various reasons, they are the Dawson/Joey of this show. (And ever since then, chemistry reads have been done for all major incoming characters.)

What about the real shocker in the promo? Laurel is beating up a man in a hospital bed. Her progression to the Black Canary?

I’d be fine with it, although given how these things tend to go on TV I’d be surprised if Oliver and Felicity stayed together longer than a season.

I know – I failed to mention that. I did notice it. It was more that I had no idea what was going on, and the Oliver/Felicity stuff caught my attention. But yeah, Laurel totally seems to attack some guy who is handcuffed to a hospital bed. Very interesting.
